esoamerica is a term used to describe the cultural area composed of most of Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, and El Salvador. From 1200 B.C. to A.D. 1521, Mesoamerica was a leading cultural center in the Americas. Mesoamerican cultures exhibited similar features such as ceremonial centers with pyramids, hieroglyphic writing, advanced mathematics that used a base twenty, a sophisticated calendar, a ritual ballgame, and human sacrifice. They developed intensive agriculture, vast trade networks, and complex political and religious hierarchies.
